Happy Holidays! 🎁🎄✨
The holiday season is upon us, which means travel, ✈️ time with family, 🏡 and hopefully some replenishment of your film inventory 🎞️ (mom, if you’re reading 😉).
Here’s what we’ve got for this week:
📺 The best film YouTube channels to binge
🎞️ Film photographers
🖼️ On the art of photography
🧪 Developing, printing and other fun stuff
📺 The best film YouTube channels to binge
When I first got into photography 12+ years ago, YouTube was not what it is today. There are a lot of really well done, very informative YouTube channels worth checking out.
In no particular order, here is Pulling Film’s 2024 Holiday YouTube Binge List. 📋
🎞️ Film photographers
Kyle McDougall
Based in UK (although he’s Canadian) his channel covers a lot of different topics, from cameras to developing/scanning. He’s also recently posted a great video on his road trip through Scotland.
Nick Carver
One of the best channels if you’re interested in learning about large format. His on location videos are fun and he really shows his process.
Willem Verbeeck
His older videos covered a lot on developing, darkroom printing and scanning. But his newer videos are of him out taking photos. All worth watching.
Paulie B
All about street photography. His Walkie Talkie series is excellent. It’s exactly what it sounds like: he walks and talks with another photographer.
Matt Day
Matt covers a lot of photo books. If you’re looking to grow your collection, this is the one for you. He has a large collection, and he does a great job of reviewing and showcasing them.
Graincheck
It’s usually just her with a film camera out taking photos. Very calming, and great to watch her process.
Mike Gray
Mike’s channel focuses a lot on portrait and studio film photography. He’s got a lot of great videos on lighting.
Jess Hobbs
Jess does a lot of woodland photography, usually in either medium or large format.
Linusandhiscamera
He does a lot of studio work, with a very distinctive use of lighting. It’s not exactly my style, but it’s great watching his process.
Todd Korol
Todd is very informative, he shoots mostly large and medium format.
🖼️ On the art of photography
The Photographic Eye
A great resource on improving the artistic side of photography. If you’re looking to improve your composition…this is the one.
Tatiana Hopper
She does a wonderful job of breaking down the history and work of different photographers.
🧪 Developing, printing and other fun stuff
Mat Marrash
Mat covers all kinds of large format and alternative processes. Wanna learn how to develop film with coffee? He’s your guy.
Ryan Jacobs
Ryan has some great videos on making platinum prints. Even if it’s not something you’re going to get into, it’s a pretty fascinating process.
Lost Light Art
All kinds of darkroom madness. From salt printing to wet plate collodion, he covers all kinds of alternative processes.
Analog Resurgence
Noah does a really great job of explaining different film types and how to develop them. This is really a great resource.
In An Instant
Everything you ever wanted to know about polaroid and instant photography.
That should keep you busy for a while. Just remember to get out and take photos as well.
Got a favorite channel that I missed? 🤔 I’d love to hear about it.
That’s it for today. 👋 Be sure to turn a negative into a positive.
